Once upon a time, there lived a mother and her son named Malin Kundang. Because his father had left him, Malin's mother had to work hard to support her family. When he grew up, Malin felt sorry for his mother who had been working hard to support him. Then Malin asked permission to go to the big city to find a job. “Mom, I want to go to the city. I want to work to help mom here,” Malin asked. “Don't leave your mother alone, son. Mom only has you here,” said the mother refused. “Let me go, Mom. I feel sorry for seeing Mom keep working until now,” said Malin. “Okay son, but remember don't forget your mother and this village when you succeed there,” said the mother, her eyes filled with tears.

The next day Malin went to the city by boat. Malin worked hard during his time away until finally he became a successful and wealthy man. Not only that, Malin finally married a beautiful woman he met in the city.

News of Malin's success reached his mother's ears. The mother always waited for Malin's arrival every day, even though Malin never came.

Until one day, Malin came with his wife and his crew. Hearing the news, Malin's mother was very happy. She hurried to greet her beloved son.

“Is that you, Malin, my son? This is your mother, do you remember,” asked the mother.

"Malin Kundang, my son, why did you leave for so long without sending news?" she said while hugging Malin Kundang.

Malin's wife was surprised to see an old woman hugging her husband. She said:

"So this old, smelly, shabby woman is your mother, Malin," said the beautiful woman.

Malin was ashamed of his mother's condition, so he released his mother's hug and pushed her until she fell. Malin also said words that made his mother heartbroken.

“I don't know you poor old woman” said Malin.

"You ignorant old woman, you're so presumptuous to claim to be my mother," Malin continued to scold.

Hearing Malin's words, the mother felt angry and sad. She didn't expect her son to change. The incident made Malin's mother curse him.

"Oh, my God Almighty, if he is really my son, I beg you to punish him and turn him into stone," prayed the angry mother.

Shortly after that, wind and thunder roared, destroying Malin's ship. Not only that, Malin's body became stiff until finally he became Malin Kundang's stone which merged with the coral.
