Once upon a time, there lived a mother and her son named Malin Kundang. Because his father had abandoned them, Malin's mother had to work hard on her own to support her family. As Malin grew older, he felt sorry for his mother who had worked so hard to raise him. Then Malin asked permission to travel to the big city to find work. “Mother, I want to go to the city. I want to work so I can help you here,” Malin pleaded. “Don’t leave your mother alone, child. I only have you here,” said his mother, refusing. “Let me go, mother. I feel sorry for you, working hard until now,” said Malin. “Alright, son, but remember not to forget your mother and this village when you become successful there,” said his mother, tears welling up in her eyes.
The next day, Malin went to the city on a ship. Malin worked hard during his travels, and eventually, he became a successful and wealthy man. Not only that, but Malin eventually married a beautiful woman he met in the city.
News of Malin’s success reached his mother's ears. His mother waited for Malin’s arrival every day, even though Malin never came.
Until one day, Malin arrived with his wife and his crew. Upon hearing this news, Malin’s mother was overjoyed. She rushed to greet her beloved son.
“Is that you, Malin, my child? This is your mother, do you remember?” asked his mother.
"Malin Kundang, my son, why did you leave for so long without sending any word?" she said while hugging Malin Kundang.
Malin’s wife was surprised to see an old woman hugging her husband. She then said:
"So this old, smelly, and dirty woman is your mother, Malin?" said the beautiful woman.
Malin felt ashamed of his mother’s condition. He released his mother's embrace and pushed her until she fell. Malin also said words that hurt his mother's feelings.
“I don’t know you, poor old woman,” said Malin.
"You wretched old woman, don’t you dare claim to be my mother!" Malin continued, yelling.
Hearing Malin’s words, his mother felt angry and sad. She couldn’t believe her son had changed. This incident made Malin’s mother curse him.
"Oh, my God Almighty, if he is truly my son, I beg you to punish him and turn him into stone!" prayed his angry mother.
Shortly after, thunder and lightning roared, destroying Malin’s ship. Not only that, but Malin’s body became stiff, and eventually, he turned into the stone of Malin Kundang, which became one with the reef.
